BBC Northern Ireland has invested in a new multi-functional outside broadcasting vehicle.
The “industry-leading” mobile production gallery features “cutting-edge IP technology” and has been delivered by Sony and integrator Megahertz.
The vehicle is part of the BBC’s Belfast Transformation Project, which includes the large-scale refurbishment of Broadcasting House and the upgrading of its broadcast technology, equipment and production spaces.
This new vehicle functions as a fully-equipped production gallery for BBC network television series such as Mastermind, and delivers enhanced outside broadcast capability at major sporting and other events. It has IP video and audio architecture, including 14 high-definition cameras, a cutting-edge vision mixer, sound console and the latest generation EVS to support high performance workflows and productions.
Adam Smyth, Director BBC NI says: “Broadcasting has always depended on technology to make great things happen. And the BBC has been at the cutting edge of innovation in this area for the last 100 years. This investment takes our outside broadcast capabilities to a new level. It will help us to deliver great content for local BBC audiences and support the creative ambitions of the local independent production sector.”
Mervyn Middleby, Business Operations Director for BBC NI says: “One of the key objectives of the BBC’s Belfast Transformation Project was to provide a mobile IP production capability to deliver BBC NI’s broadcast strategy – this is a fantastic example of transformative design, driven by local experts, which will flexibly deliver the region’s production demands.”
