Plimsoll Productions, part of ITV Studios, is launching new division, Plimsoll Immersive.

The company has appointed Alex Ranken, Creative Director of Natural History, to lead the unit while he continues to create content for traditional broadcast television.

Plimsoll Immersive will develop original content as well as leverage the company’s existing IP for immersive experiences across AR and VR, both in 2D and 3D. The new division will build on the “unique suitability of natural history for immersive environments and Plimsoll’s established track record of technological innovation in storytelling.” The company is already producing “multiple projects for major platforms”, including the adaptation of an award-winning title.

Over the last five years with Plimsoll, Ranken has directed and produced series including the BAFTA-nominated and Jackson Wild Media Award-winning Tiny World for Apple and the four-time Emmy Award-winning A Real Bug’s Life for Disney+, for which he earned an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Single Camera Live Action Series. His other titles include The Wild Ones (Apple TV+) and A Year on Planet Earth (ITV).

Mark Brownlow, Head of Natural History, says: “Plimsoll has always looked to the future, and Alex represents what comes next — a next-generation creator whose innovative storytelling and command of technology make him the perfect fit to grow this division and propel the company into an exciting new space. Alex will build on Plimsoll’s experience in 3D storytelling which has already seen the recent release of Horse Power, a 3D IMAX film.”

“Plimsoll has a reputation for visually rich, bold storytelling and editorial integrity,” adds Alex Ranken. “We are now applying those elements in this exciting new world, allowing audiences to be immersed in the story, which ultimately fosters deeper connections and engagement with the natural world.”

The company is currently producing LIVE event, Skyscraper Live, which will see acclaimed free soloist Alex Honnold climb Taipei 101 without ropes on Netflix.
