Netflix drama, baby Reindeer,  is a true story, written by and starting Richard Gadd, who adapted his award-winning one-man play which premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2019.

Based on Gadd’s own tumultuous experiences, sparked by a seemingly innocent act of kindness, the show delves into the depths of human obsession, trauma, and resilience.

Centred around protagonist Donny, played by Gadd himself, the series plunges viewers into a relentless journey marked by stalking and anguish. Donny’s fateful encounter with the enigmatic Martha (Jessica Gunning) at a London pub sets off a chain of events that relentlessly tests his resolve.

The 7x part series is produced by Clerkenwell Films (End of the F***ing World/Somewhere Boy). It is directed by, Weronika Tolfiska and Josephine Bornbusch, and produced by Matthew Mulot. Richard Gadd was the writer, actor and executive producer on the show.

JAM VFX was the sole VFX vendor for Baby Reindeer.

Shooting on locations in both Edinburgh and London JAM were on call for on set VFX supervision when required.

Gadd was keen to tell his story through a wide range of transitions. Whether that’s in and out of screens or stitching multiple plates together highlighting the passage of time. Some key moments where this is particularly noted are when Martha is waiting at the bus stop all day for Donny to return from work.As the series is centred around the bombardment of emails Donny receives from Martha, screen comps were a heavily featured post requirement. There was also a number of invisible VFX needs, ranging from amends to signage to wound continuity.

JAM VFX delivered 93 VFX shots for the series, working closely with both Gadd and post supervisors Charlotte Dean and Kitty McWilliams. JAM’s HOP Evren Olgun-Knight said on working on the series “From the first spotting session it was immediately obvious what an incredible show this would be and we felt very privileged to create the visual effects for such remarkable story. We’ve worked with Clerkenwell a couple times in the past and it is always a very smooth, supportive and collaborative process, which we love!”

“JAM were exceptional throughout the editing process of Baby Reindeer, performing VFX miracles with tight turnarounds which always elevated the show on screen. The staff there are simply a pleasure to work with too. Polite, diligent, proficient, and always there to help at the drop of a hat. I would work with them again in an instant.” – Richard Gadd

Other recent work highlights for JAM VFX are Black Mirror S6 and Red Eye which is currently broadcasting on ITV1/ITVX.
