BBC channels lead the final shortlist for this year’s Grierson British Documentary Awards with 29 of the 52 nominated films.

The broadcaster dominates the Single Documentary – Domestic, Arts, Science and Series categories.

Meanwhile, Channel 4 has six films in the running and Sky has two with Channel 5, Vice, Netflix and Nowness all with 1 nomination each. Festival, university and cinematic screenings make up the remaining 11.

There are 66 directors in the final cut, and six filmmakers feature in multiple categories.:

* Pip Broughton’s Aberfan: The Green Hollow, is nominated in both Best Single Documentary Domestic and Best Historical categories.
* Dan Edge and Lauren Mucciolo’s Last Days of Solitary, features on both Best Single Documentary – International and Best Current Affairs lists.
*Raoul Peck’s I Am Not Your Negro is in both the Best Historical and Best Cinema categories.
* Martha Delap’s Chronicles of Nadiya earns nominations in the Best Entertaining and Best Presenter categories.
* Finally in a Grierson first, Daniel Gordon finds himself in two categories for two different films: Hillsborough in Best Single Documentary – Domestic and The Fall in Best Single Documentary – International.

Chair of the Grierson Trust, Lorraine Heggessey said: "Once again our filmmakers have wowed us with an amazing array of gritty, touching and engaging films. The jurors had a challenging job with so many strong contenders in play. Our new Shorts category reflects the continuing evolution of the documentary form.”

The awards will be presented on 6th November at a ceremony hosted by actor Stephen Mangan.
