Here’s the vfx breakdown for Outpost VFX’s work on Paramount+ show, Knuckles.
Outpost’s work on Knuckles ranged from bespoke character animation to Knuckles’ red energy and destruction FX.
Led by Outpost VFX Supervisor Owen Jones and Animation Supervisor Oliver Dale, the Outpost animation and creature teams worked together to create a character that stays true to the original material and is believable when set in a photorealistic environment.
Working closely with overall VFX Supervisor Martino Madeddu and Sonic illustrator and Knuckles Co-Producer Tyson Hesse, the team built upon the character’s expressive range, creating a set of base face shapes to use as a starting point for each shot. These would include some expressive brows and mouth shapes for basic phonemes such as AH, EE, OH, F, and M. The team would then develop these base shapes for individual shots, ensuring Knuckles’ iconic attitude was always maintained.
The Outpost team would also tackle the bowling alley fight sequence of episode 1 where we are introduced to antagonists Mason and Willoughby who are sent to steal Knuckles’ power. This fight sequence would include plenty of super close-ups of Knuckles’ facial performance as well as wider character animation and many different types of destruction FX to the surrounding environment.
