Channel 4 has commissioned Yorkshire by the Sea, a new four-part series from Yorkshire-based True North.

Celebrating the people and landscape of England’s largest county, Yorkshire By The Sea follows the stories of everyday heroes and communities living and working in and around the Yorkshire coast.

Jasper Hone commissioned Yorkshire By The Sea (4×60’) with Channel 4’s Head of Lifestyle & Glasgow Hub, Jo Street. Executive Producer for True North is Christian Hills with Andrew Painten as Series Producer and Ben Sheldon as Series Director. The series will be distributed internationally by Passion.

The 100-mile stretch of Yorkshire shoreline is one of Britain’s most popular tourist destinations. Each episode of Yorkshire By The Sea will follow locals working on the county’s coast, from the seaside resorts of Saltburn and Scarborough in the north to the shifting sands of Spurn Point in the south.

Living alongside the fast-eroding coastline makes every day a challenge and the series also explores how the county is combating climate change through new innovation and industry, and how locals are diversifying to ensure they can still earn a living working land and sea. As some fight to save their industries, others start new ventures, and some fight to protect coastline’s epic wildlife.

C4 commissioning executive Jasper Hone said: “This beautiful series will showcase the breath-taking landscape of the Yorkshire coastline, but also show how communities are facing – and tackling – the impact of the climate crisis in their daily lives.”

Executive Producer for True North, Christian Hills, adds: “We’re clearly biased, but this series combines the most glorious coastal landscape with the warmth and wit of genuine Yorkshire characters, telling their fascinating stories in their own words.”
