RDF has been commissioned by Channel 4 to produce a one-off documentary that will cover the quarter-billion-pound renovation of self-made billionaire John Caudwell’s Mayfair home.

Titled Britain’s Most Expensive Home: Building for a Billionaire, the production will follow the extravagant building plans of Caudwell, who sold mobile retailer phones 4u for just under £1.5 billion in 2006.

The project, which covers almost 50,000 square foot, will highlight how trades people and designers navigate the extravagant demands of the super rich in one of London’s most sought after postcodes. The renovation includes tasks such as engineering a device, which can store eight cars at once and installing a river in a dining room, which is inhabited by live fish.

“This incredible access gives us a glimpse into the world of the truly mega wealthy, where every whim can be realised, but where things can still go wrong, as on any building site.” said Barraclough, who when describing Caudwell stated “He is a man with huge wealth, but one who still counts the pennies, the boy from Stoke who has set his heart on a home in the ‘old money’ world of Mayfair. It makes for a fascinating character portrayal.”

Britain’s Most Expensive Home: Building for a Billionaire will be a 1 x 60 prime-time production, commissioned by Commissioning Editor for Features at Channel 4, Jonny Rothery.
