BAFTA has announced the nominations for the 2024 BAFTA Television Craft Awards and BAFTA Television Awards with P&O Cruises.
The ten programmes with the most nominations are:
• Eight nominations for The Crown
• Seven nominations for Demon 79 (Black Mirror)
• Six nominations for Happy Valley, Slow Horses and The Sixth Commandment
• Five nominations for The Last of Us, The Long Shadow and Succession
• Four nominations for Eurovision Song Contest 2023 and Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland
See full list of nominations below.
17 out of 44 nominees in the performance categories have received their first BAFTA Television Awards nomination, including Amit Shah (Happy Valley), Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us), Bridget Christie (The Change), David Tennant (Good Omens), Éanna Harwicke (The Sixth Commandment), Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown), Hammed Animashaun (Black Ops), Hannah Waddingham (Eurovision Song Contest 2023), Harriet Walters (Succession), Harris Dickinson (A Murder at the End of the World), Kane Robinson (Top Boy), Máiréad Tyers (Extraordinary), Mawaan Rizwan (Juice), Nico Parker (The Last of Us), Rob Beckett (Rob & Romesh Vs), Roisin Gallagher (The Lovers) and Sofia Oxenham (Extraordinary).
Two first-time nominees in the New Talent: Fiction category Kat Sadler (writer – Such Brave Girls) and Mawaan Rizwan (writer – Juice) are also named nominees across Writer Comedy, and Scripted Comedy for Such Brave Girls and Writer Comedy and Male Performance in a Comedy programme for Juice, with three nominations apiece.
Jane Millichip, CEO of BAFTA, said: “It is a real privilege to announce today’s nominations which recognise the most gripping, entertaining, challenging, funniest, most informative, highest quality, and most impactful TV programmes of 2023, as voted for by BAFTA members. More than 100 programmes across 12 broadcasters and streamers represent an extraordinary range of content. We are proud to showcase this incredible roster of talent at our Television Craft Awards on 28 April and our Television Awards with P&O Cruises on 12 May. It is important that we celebrate the extraordinary craft and creativity of the broadcast sector, particularly during this challenging year for many people working in the industry.”
Sara Putt, Chair of BAFTA, said: “Water-cooler TV moments, brave documentaries which expand our world-view, and powerful real-life inspired dramas – these are just some of the BAFTA nominated TV programmes for audiences to watch. I’m delighted to see so many first-time nominees, so much new and emerging talent and so many debut projects recognised today. At a time when budgets are tight and creative risk-taking can feel ever riskier, we hope our awards can play a positive role in reinforcing the value of nurturing new talent and ideas, as well as holding a mirror up to stubborn industry inequities, particularly for talented female directors who are still significantly outnumbered by their male counterparts when it comes to awards submissions. The exceptional variety and quality of programmes nominated reflects the creative powerhouse that is the UK television industry, and it is an honour for BAFTA voters to watch and debate such brilliant TV. Congratulations to everyone nominated.”
47 competitive categories feature in the BAFTA Television Awards with P&O Cruises and BAFTA Television Craft Awards – recognising exceptional performances, craftsmanship and stories broadcast from 1 January – 31 December 2023.
The BAFTA Television Craft Awards will take place on Sunday 28 April. The BAFTA Television Awards with P&O Cruises will once again be hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan and will be broadcast on BBC One and iPlayer on Sunday 12 May.
Today’s nominations have been determined through a combination of TV membership-wide voting, Juries and Chapter voting. Juries are comprised of voters with the relevant professional expertise and balance of gender, background, location and age. Chapters are made up of BAFTA members who hold specialist knowledge in the relevant craft to the category in consideration. Juries and Chapters are composed of voters from within BAFTA’s membership, which includes over 5700 television industry creative practitioners. Latest demographic information on BAFTA’s membership is here.
Given the very high volume of entries to the BAFTA Television and BAFTA Television Craft Awards, the use of Juries ensures every longlisted entry for each category is seen and considered by each voting member. This year, over 500 voters across 127 hours participated in 43 juries, as well as four Chapter votes took place to decide the nominations. BAFTA’s guiding principles are to celebrate creative excellence, level the playing field, provide a fair and robust process, and encourage positive industry change.
Both awards are made possible by a network of partners and donors. The headline sponsor of the BAFTA Television Awards is P&O Cruises. Further details of this year’s supporters can be found here. The BAFTA Television Craft Awards is supported by Official Television Craft Partners Ecotricity and The Partnership Group and Category Sponsors 3 Mills Studios, Hotcam and ScreenSkills High-end Television Fund.
The P&O Cruises Memorable Moment Award nominees were unveiled last Thursday, the only BAFTA Television Award voted-for by the public. Voting is open until 9 April.
