Sony Pictures Television has inked an exclusive deal with award-winning director Matt Smith’s Brighton based outfit Circle Circle Films.
The deal will see SPT’s International Production division co-developing, co-producing, and distributing titles on Circle Circle’s slate.
Founded in 2018, Circle Circle is headed up by BAFTA award-winning director Matt Smith who is best known for his critically-acclaimed BBC film about football player, Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum and Dad. The film won a BAFTA, Broadcast, RTS and Bulldog award for best single documentary, along with a Grierson nomination.
Circle Circle’s other works include the true crime box-set The Other Mrs Jordan, which recently launched on ITVX, telling the true story of bigamist, fraudster and conman William Jordan; the feature documentary Rooney and Rio Ferdinand’s Tipping Point for Amazon.
The collaboration will allow Circle Circle to “capitalise on its market position in the sport genre, whilst expanding its factual slate in true crime, music and entertainment documentary and formats.”
Matthew Justice, EVP UK & Europe, Sony Pictures Television, says: “Our ambition at SPT is to work with and invest in world class talent, and the breadth of output and success Matt has experienced since he launched Circle Circle Films really speaks for itself. As a specialist in ground-breaking documentaries and factual series, we’re tremendously excited to be working with him and his team and complementing our existing non-scripted output with his slate. We’re thrilled that he sees SPT as the best partner to take Circle Circle to the next stage of its journey.”
Matt Smith, MD and Founder, Circle Circle Films, says “I’ve been lucky enough to build Circle Circle’s ambitious slate over the past couple of years with prominent titles such as Rooney, Rio Ferdinand’s Tipping Point and The Other Mrs Jordan – Catching the Ultimate Conman, amongst others. I’m thrilled to be partnering with Sony Pictures Television, tapping into their extensive global reach and industry expertise to further turbo-charge our output and build a thriving, inclusive production company.”
