Nutopia has appointed former Lion creative director Tom Watt-Smith as Creative Director of Formats and Special Projects, to help expand its slate of documentary series and returning formats.

In this newly created role, Tom will support Nutopia’s continued growth into new markets, price points, and territories. He will be based in London and will report to Simon Willgoss, Chief Creative Officer and Jane Root, CEO.

Simon Willgoss said: “We’re delighted to land Tom. He’s one of the UK’s top creatives and will lead our charge into new markets and genres, as well as bolster our relationships and operations in the UK where Tom’s so highly-regarded as a producer and executive.”

“It’s been a huge privilege working at Lion TV, but the chance to join Jane and her team at this exciting moment in Nutopia’s evolution is an opportunity that was impossible to turn down.” Said Tom Watt-Smith “The scale and ambition of Nutopia’s projects is legendary and I feel honoured to join in the next chapter of their story.  I cannot wait to get started.”

Prior to joining Nutopia, Watt-Smith was an executive producer at RAW and Studio Lambert, before joining the leadership team at Lion TV.  As Creative Director (Premium and Specialist Factual) at Lion, he developed and executive produce(d) series and feature documentaries including Stolen: Catching the Art Thieves (BBC), Saving Venice (PBS/Arte), Arctic from Above (SKY/NBCU), Earths Hidden Volcanoes (NHK/PBS) and Caribbean (BBC) – as well as projects for National Geographic.
