Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries has announced she is to leave her role as culture secretary when Liz Truss takes over as Prime Minister.

Truss had asked Dorries to stay on in the job but she has now announced she will leave the role. Insiders suggest she will also leave the Commons with a peerage from outgoing PM Boris Johnson expected for Dorries.

On Twitter, Dorries said: I have submitted my letter of resignation to the outgoing Prime Minister. I am humbled that Liz Truss extended her confidence in me by asking me to remain as Secretary of State for DCMS. I will always show her the same loyalty and support I have to Boris Johnson.

Both Channel 4 and the BBC will be cautiously relieved that she has quit as Dorries was a fierce critic of both the BBC licence fee and was one of the main driving forces for pushing through Channel 4 privatisation plans.

All eyes will now be on who becomes her replacement.
