Channel 5 has recommissioned a further 6 episodes of Coastguard: Search and Rescue SOS, by producers Middlechild Productions.

Series two of the observational documentary series Coastguard: Search and Rescue SOS will continue following the exceptional people behind The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

Over the Summer and Autumn of 2023 four filming units will exclusively follow MCA teams across the UK to “bring to television screens, stories that have never been told before.”

The series was commissioned out of Channel 5’s 2021 Commissioner Pilot Scheme, an initiative launched by Ben Frow, Chief Content Officer, UK, Paramount, in which he challenged each of his Commissioning Editors to explore various ideas and invest £30k in a pilot with the intention of it becoming a hit series for the channel.  Other soon-to-air titles created as a result of the scheme include: Pet Psychic w.t (Middlechild Productions and Little Hut Studios, commissioned by Kit Morey) , Playing Grown Ups w.t (MGM Alternative UK commissioned by Daniel Pearl), Wife on Strike (Proper Content commissioned by Denise Seneviratne) and The Big Steam Adventure (DSP, a Banijay UK company, commissioned by Lucy Willis), which aired in April.

Greg Barnett, Commissioning Editor: Factual Entertainment Channel 5 & Paramount + said: “In addition to being a high-rating first series, the channel received an enormous amount of praise from viewers applauding the immense bravery, tireless work and difficult tasks carried out by those that work for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Middlechild crafted a tense and dramatic series that reflects real lives and real dangers. I’m delighted it delivered such a positive reaction and that more episodes are on their way.”

David Sumnall, Managing Director of Middlechild added: “It’s been a genuine privilege to be able to follow the work of the MCA staff and volunteers for the last 12 months. Their professionalism, dedication and bravery is incredible to witness. Thankfully audiences agreed and we’re getting to put on the hard hats and harnesses again! Series two promises to be another roller coaster of emotions with nail biting rescues, tense inspections and important criminal investigations.”
