Actress, writer, comedian and author Meera Syal CBE will be the Alternative MacTaggart speaker at the 2023 Edinburgh TV Festival.

The recipient of the BAFTA Fellowship at this year’s BAFTA Television Awards, Syal’s credits range from Goodness Gracious Me and The Kumars at Number 42 to Roar, The Split and The Devil’s Hour, and Bhaji On The Beach and Anita and Me to Yesterday and Paddington 2, Syal will soon be seen in Acorn’s Mrs. Sindhu Investigates and Prime Video’s Wheel of Time.

Syal will speak to Festival Executive Chair, Fatima Salaria, in a session produced by Nisha Parti, about her experiences throughout a multifaceted career, the highs and the lows of being a trailblazing British Asian woman in the film and TV industry and “reflecting on the importance of representation and giving voice to unheard stories.”

Syal said: “I am delighted to be invited to speak as this year’s Alternative MacTaggart and look forward to sharing some of those untold stories with the wonderful Fatima Salaria.”
