ITV and Red Planet Pictures have opened submissions for the 2020 Red Planet writing prize to discover new writing talent.
The winner will receive a script commission from ITV and runners up will be offered development opportunities with the channel. This year’s prize is looking for four-part contemporary thrillers and returning procedural series. Since launching the prize in 2007, Red Planet Pictures, have had success with the procedural genre, a previous finalist developed the BBC drama series Death in Paradise, which is now in its ninth series.
Online submissions for the prize open March 27th and will close April 3rd 2020. Ten shortlisted writers will be invited to a one day pitching masterclass with Red Planet Pictures’ CEO Tony Jordan.
Chloe Tucker, ITV Drama Commissioner said on the announcement, “ITV is the home of mainstream drama. Our shows need to be noisy, unmissable and appeal to a wide audience, which means reflecting and celebrating the diverse makeup of the UK today. We are looking for brilliant storytellers and particularly encourage writers from underrepresented communities. ITV is for everyone, across background, race, disability, sexuality, gender identity and expression.”
To be considered for the prize, writers are required to submit the following:
• An existing original spec script, full length and for any medium TV, film, radio and theatre
• A one to two-page pitch for an original TV serial or series idea for ITV
• A short CV highlighting any writing credits (these are not essential to enter)
• Screenwriters must be based in the UK and Eire. The idea should not be in development with another broadcaster or independent company.
