According to reports on Bloomberg, YouTube is to step back from its ambition to be a producer of paid for high end dramas and comedy.

The Bloomberg story suggests that YouTube has now stopped accepting pitches for drama and comedy and has axed plans for further series of sci fi blockbuster Origin, made by left Bank Pictures and comedy Overthinking with Kat and June. Bloomberg also reported that YouTube’s head of originals Susanne Daniels was on the verge of leaving the company.

However, YouTube has since released a statement to Reuters stating it had a slate of high-end dramas and comedies in production and would be announcing new and returning series soon.

Daniels also released a statement saying: “While it’s strangely flattering to be the topic of Hollywood gossip, please know I am committed to YouTube and can’t wait to unveil our robust slate of new and returning originals.”

The speculation comes at the same time that Apple is about to make a big announcement about its own plans for producing and financing high end TV content. The Apple Event begins at 5pm UK time today.
