ES Broadcast Hire is expanding its European operation with the opening of an office in Rome. The office will be managed by Mario Sperelli, who joins the company as Hire Manager for Italy.

The addition of the Rome branch follows the opening of premises in Madrid and Belgium in the last 18 months, and brings the total number of offices the live production hire specialist operates in the UK and Europe to six. The office is to open with immediate effect.

“Having a presence in Rome will allow us to build on our existing portfolio of clients and to service what is a fast-growing market for us in Italy. Our extensive fleet of both Grass Valley and Sony camera channels is perfectly suited to the needs of Italian broadcasters, whether their production is in HD or 4K,” said Warren Taggart, Managing Director of ES Broadcast Hire.

The company has already provided equipment for several high-profile sports events in Italy, including the first football match to use an EVS XT4K in Verona, and cross-country skiing in the Dolomites. A range of children’s and light entertainment shows such as Italia’s Got Talent have also been serviced, as well as arts events, including the first 4K live broadcast of an open-air opera performance – Bizet’s Carmen – at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome.

Taggart continued: “We are delighted to have recruited someone of the calibre of Mario Sperelli, with his extensive experience and track record in the live production and sports markets in Italy, to manage the Rome office. His local knowledge will be indispensable in offering the best service possible to our clients.”

Sperelli has worked in live production in Italy for the last decade. He was sales manager for UHD broadcast specialist DBW Communication, where he was project manager on a project financed by the European Space Agency for the satellite transmission of more than 1,500 sports events each year in Ka band. He also managed 3D and 4K productions on Serie A and Champions League football, tennis tournaments and basketball matches. And he had executive producer roles in 4K productions of the operas La Bohème and The Barber of Seville, as well as a 4K documentary about the canonisation of Popes John Paul II and John XXIII.

Most recently, Sperelli worked as sales and production manager for 4K and HD broadcast services and rental provider Mediacam. He managed the production of several light entertainment shows including Italia’s Got Talent, chat show Di Martedi and children’s show Chi ha incastrato Peter Pan (Who Framed Peter Pan?)
