Factual entertainment and scripted producer Pernel Media is making Mysteries on the Nile with Sir David Suchet for SBS.
The six-part documentary travelogue explores the enduring enigmas of Ancient Egypt, through the lens of one of Britain’s most revered actors Sir David Suchet.
The series follows Pernel’s recent expansion into the scripted space and their collaboration with Suchet on the 5 scripted drama, The Au Pair.
Produced by Pernel Media and directed by British director Gwyn WIilliams, the 6×45 show draws on the latest archaeological discoveries and cutting-edge research. “Blending rigorous science with the pace and tension of a drama thriller, Mysteries on the Nile re-examines long-held assumptions and confronts myths that have endured for millennia.”
Says Sir David Suchet: “I’m honoured to return to Egypt to learn more about this revelatory civilisation with Pernel Media. It’s truly exciting to have the opportunity to solve a different kind of mystery and unearth the truth about an ancient world that still impacts our everyday’
Samuel Kissous, founder and CEO of Pernel Media, says, “Mysteries on the Nile is the perfect example of cross fertilization between scripted and unscripted. I met Sir David Suchet on The Au Pair, the first drama we produced for 5. We connected and I learnt how passionate he is about ancient civilisations. This project was borne out of that conversation and when I suggested to him the idea of a series exploring ancient Egypt through his eyes, he was immediately and genuinely interested in it. We are honoured to pursue the relationship with him, and we are convinced that his infectious curiosity and generosity will create a fantastically engaging series”.
Acting Head of Network Programming Natalie Edgar, says, “After the success of Sir David’s last travel series on SBS, we are thrilled to be the Australian home for his new adventure along the Nile and I’m sure our audiences will be enthralled and engaged by his fabulous on-screen presence in this brand-new series.”
The series is to be executive produced by Samuel Kissous and Celine Lehmann, International EP at Pernel Media.
SBS has already pre-bought the rights for Australia and other deals are currently being finalised by Pernel Media. Filming will take place on location in the Spring of 2026.
