Entries are now open for the Grierson 2020 British Documentary Awards.

There are 14 categories to enter before May 29 closing date.

For the first time, entrants will be asked to provide additional information about the steps they have taken to ensure that diversity and inclusion practices are embedded in the making of their film or series. Juries will look at what efforts have been made to include under-represented groups both on and off screen; as well as any themes and narratives that address diversity and inclusion.

Lorraine Heggessey, Chair of The Grierson Trust outlines the changes to all 2020 entries: “This year we have added diversity and inclusion to the criteria the judges will use when reaching their decision. The Grierson Trust has always promoted diversity in its broadest sense and by this we include socio-economic and geographic alongside other kinds of diversity. We hope this will encourage producers and directors to consider the way they approach the content of their films as well as the make-up of the production team.

“In making diversity a key judging criteria, we are also seeking to improve our understanding of the industry landscape to enable us to promote good practice and raise the issues around diversity and inclusion in the film and television industries.”

For the 2020 awards, all entries must have had their first UK screening between 1 June 2019 and 31 May 2020. This includes scheduled screenings within recognised film, television and documentary festivals. Entries are accepted for both analogue and digital platforms – such as Netflix, iPlayer, Amazon – as long as the screening was accessible by a UK-based audience.
