Tin Roof factual indie Blink Films is producing a landmark series “with new revelations exposing the truth behind the world’s most glamourous airliner.”
The series is a coproduction with Smithsonian Channel, Channel 4 , France Télévisions, RTL/ntv, SBS and PBS International.
At the height of the Cold War, two superpowers and a new European consortium went head-to-head in a battle for supersonic passenger jet supremacy: the Anglo-French Concorde project, the Tupolev TU-144 in the Soviet Union, and the Boeing 2707 in the US. They would all ultimately end in failure and tragic disaster. The ultra-ambitious swing-wing Boeing never got off the ground, while both Concorde and the Tupolev crashed, claiming 127 lives. However, questions remain about the development and untimely end of these two engineering marvels, three decades, but just four miles apart – in particular why their appearance was so similar.
Concorde: The Untold Story (2×47’ and 1×90’) is the “dark and complex tale of engineering breakthroughs, espionage and national prestige as the British and French team battled their Russian counterparts in a high-stakes, billion-dollar race to develop the only successful supersonic airliner the world has ever seen.”
Dan Chambers, Creative Director, Blink Films said: “Concorde: The Untold Story scratches beneath its sleek supersonic skin to reveal a turbulent history steeped in engineering brilliance, international intrigue, and bitter political rivalries as it transports viewers into a Cold War world where being first and going fastest was worth any price.”
Tracy Beckett, Commissioning Editor, Content for PBS International said: “We’re thrilled to be continuing our collaboration with the always innovating Blink Films on yet another groundbreaking film. Just as our last project together, Chernobyl: New Evidence, we look for this type of intriguing storytelling to bring to our broadcast partners for coproduction opportunities.”
Concorde: The Untold Story is produced by Robert Davis, directed by Oscar Chan and the executive producers are Dan Gold and Dan Chambers. It is being distributed internationally by PBS International.
