The new Cornwall office of specialist factual producer Big Wave Productions, has won its first commission.

It has been commissioned by BBC One to make Cornwall’s Wildest Wave.  The 30-minute film is for BBC One strand Our Lives.

Cornwall’s Wildest Wave will track the story of 33-year-old Cornishman and international big wave surfing legend, Tom Butler, and his search for a monster Cornish wave. Butler is part of a niche group of elite athletes who travel the world chasing the biggest swells. Cornwall’s Wildest Wave tracks the surfer’s attempt to ride ‘The Stones’, a mythical unridden big wave off the Atlantic coast of Cornwall, generated by a notorious reef that has claimed the lives of many mariners.

Mike Cunliffe, Big Wave Productions, says: “The film is a beautiful celebration of Cornwall, of wild weather and extraordinary waves. But above all, it’s an intimate character profile of Tom Butler, his love of the ocean and gives a unique insight into  what it means to be a surfer.

“Along with the obvious synergy of this being a Cornish story being made out of our Cornwall office, it is stories like this which are the beating heart of the Big Wave Productions’ ethos – bringing all that is remarkable about the natural world to the screen, with all that is mystical, beautiful and to be treasured about our environment.  It’s at the very core of everything we do.”

Diana Hare, Commissioning Executive, BBC England, adds: “BBC England is committed to bringing stories about people from every corner of England to the screen. Tom’s determination and passion for Cornwall make this film perfect for the Our Lives series, which showcases the lives of people across all 4 Nations. Big Wave have overcome considerable technical challenges including our unpredictable weather to bring this remarkable tale to life.”

Cornwall’s Wildest Wave is Executive Produced by Sarah Cunliffe and directed by Mike Cunliffe for Big Wave Productions.  It was commissioned by Diana Hare for BBC One.
