Historian and broadcaster, David Olusoga, has launched new indie, Hillgate Films.
The company will focus on developing and producing “innovative and thought-provoking” history-focused documentaries, formats and series, both with, and without, Olusoga as on-screen talent.
Hillgate launches with support from BBC Studios in the form of a development deal that will reinforce growth ambitions in return for a first look on distribution rights.
Hillgate Films will operate as a co-producer rather than standalone producer to allow Olusoga to focus on “fewer, more ambitious projects.” Hillgate will collaborate with a range of established partners on larger-scale projects “while leaving Olusoga the creative freedom to concentrate on the content itself, rather than the day-to-day management of a production company.”
David Olusoga said: “I’m excited to launch Hillgate Films and begin this new chapter of producing and presenting projects that challenge, educate, and engage audiences. We want to explore the untold stories from history, and we’re thrilled to be partnering with the forward-thinking and dynamic team at BBC Studios. I’m passionate about creating work that brings fresh perspectives to light, and I believe we have an incredible opportunity to do that with Hillgate Films. Hillgate’s first two projects are in production and with a development deal with BBC Studios in place, we’re ready to grow and scale the company, and have ambitious plans for the future.”
Olusoga is joined at Hillgate by MD, Ben Hall previously Global Director of Programmes at Motion Content Group who added : “It’s an exciting time to be launching Hillgate Films. David’s track record as a storyteller and historian speaks for itself, and I’m delighted to be working with him to bring important and engaging stories to audiences.”
Kate Ward, Managing Director, Unscripted Productions at BBC Studios says – “David has a proven track record of telling bold and nuanced stories from history that resonate globally and can drive conversations and change perspectives. We are delighted to be continuing our long working relationship and look forward to continuing success with David and Hillgate in the future.”
Olusoga, known for his work on BBC’s A House Through Time and the recent landmark BBC series, Union will both executive produce and present series for Hillgate.
