The BBC has announced a new major natural history series from Plimsoll, Secret Garden.
Secret Garden is a 5×60’ series for BBC One and iPlayer from Plimsoll Productions in the landmark tradition. Secret Garden tells the surprising stories of the wild characters that live right on our doorsteps, revealing what they get up to when our backs are turned.
Jack Bootle, Head of Commissioning, Specialist Factual, said: “Last year, BBC One’s Wild Isles became the highest rating factual series of the year, showing there’s a huge audience who are excited by the wildlife of Britain and Ireland. Now, in Secret Garden, we’re looking at animal dramas that are even closer to home – the unbelievable true stories playing out right now in gardens up and down the UK. It’s a major three-year production that gives our gardens the bluechip treatment. I can’t wait to see what the team at Plimsoll Productions deliver.”
Britain’s 30 million gardens have a combined area greater than all of our national nature reserves combined. And it turns out that our flowerbeds, vegetable patches, lawns and ponds are home to thousands of animal and plant species – many rarely seen, most barely understood.
Each episode is set in a very different garden – from the wilds of Scotland to the urban jungle. Each is home to a very different cast of characters. And it turns out that each is of vital importance.
This entertaining five-part series will reveal how we – as a nation of gardeners – can create a lifeline for our best loved wildlife. And how, through helping our wild neighbours, we can also make life better for ourselves.
Filmed with the latest lowlight, aerial and macro technology, this is British wildlife as you’ve never seen it before.
Secret Garden, a 5×60’ series for BBC One and iPlayer, is made by Plimsoll Productions, co-produced by The Open University. It was commissioned by Jack Bootle, Head of Commissioning, Specialist Factual. The Executive Producers are Grant Mansfield, Martha Holmes and Mark Brownlow and the Series Producer is Bill Markham.
Global distribution will be handled by ITV Studios.
