The BBC has acquired all five seasons of the hit American comedy-drama series The Bold Type and Australian drama Bad Behaviour

The Bold Type centres on the lives of Jane, Kat and Sutton, three millennials who work in New York at the nation’s top women’s magazine, Scarlet. Navigating the turbulent world of publishing, their identities and individual voices, the series stars Katie Stevens (Faking It) as Jane Sloan, Aisha Dee (Safe Home) as Kat Edison, Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus) as Sutton Brady, Sam Page (Mad Men) as Richard Logan, Matt Ward (Arrow) as Alex Crawford, Melora Hardin (The Office, Transparent) as high-powered Editor-in-Chief Jacquelyn Carlyle, and Stephen Conrad Moore (Empire) as Oliver Grayson.  The series is loosely inspired by Joanna Coles, former Editor-in-Chief of Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan.

Australian drama Bad Behaviour has also been acquired for BBC Three and BBC iPlayer. The 4 x 55’ series stars Jana McKinnon (We Children from Bahnhof Zoo) as 25-year-old ‘Jo’ Joanna Mackenzie who bumps into her old high school friend Alice Kang (Yerin Ha, Halo) and memories come flooding back of the brutal year they spent together at Silver Creek – the wilderness campus of an exclusive girls’ boarding school. Back then, the two scholars immediately felt a close bond of friendship – that is, until the cool and manipulative Portia (Markella Kavenagh, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) comes between them.

BBC Head of Programme Acquisition, Sue Deeks says: “We are delighted that these two series are joining our BBC Three and iPlayer line-up – they are very different in tone, but both feature characters that viewers will empathise and engage with as they deal with the complexities of life.”

The shows were acquired for the BBC from NBCUniversal Global Distribution. The Bold Type is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, and The District. The series’ executive producers include Wendy Straker Hauser, Matt McGuinness, David Bernad, Joanna Coles, Brian Madden, Ruben Fleischer and Sandrine Gros d’Aillon. Bad Behaviour is produced by Matchbox Pictures, which is part of Universal International Studios, a division of Universal Studio Group. Led by an all-female creative team, the series is written by Pip Karmel (Total Control, New Gold Mountain) and Magda Wozniak (The Messenger, While The Men Are Away), produced by Amanda Higgs (The Secret Life of Us, Barracuda) and directed by Corrie Chen (New Gold Mountain, Homecoming Queens). Major production investment from Screen Australia in association with Stan, with development and production support from VicScreen.
