Marking the first best picture win for a streamer last night at the Oscars, the gong for Coda is also the first best picture win for a film that debuted at the Sundance Festival.

The Apple Originals Film tells the story of the hearing daughter of deaf adults who pursues a singing career. Apple bought it for a reported $25m dollars after a bidding war between streamers.

Last night’s awards saw Will Smith win best actor For King Richard, Jane Campion won best director for BBC Films-backed The Power of the Dog and Kenneth Branagh landed best writer of an original screenplay for Belfast.

Other British wins included Riz Ahmed for short live action film The Long Goodbye.

Joe Walker won the Oscar for best editing, for the sci-fi epic Dune. Composer and music producer Theo Green was among the winners for best sound, again for  Dune. And Jenny Beavan won for best costume design for  Cruella.

There was also a tribute to The Godfather trilogy in its 50th anniversary year.  The film’s legendary director and co-writer Francis Ford Coppola took the stage with leading man Al Pacino and The Godfather II star Robert Di Niro.
