Altitude Television is developing Eliza Clark’s crime novel Penance, with screenwriter and best-selling author Juno Dawson adapting for TV.

A story of murder among teenagers on the eve of the historic Brexit vote, Penance was released earlier in 2023 to critical acclaim and established itself as a Booktok sensation.

Dawson was the creator of Doctor Who: Redacted the podcast series.

The deal was brokered by Marc Simonsson of Mulcahy Sweeney Associates on behalf of Rachel Mann at Jo Unwin Literary Agency, and Gabby Kardar, development executive at Altitude Television.

Gabby Kardar development executive, Altitude Television commented; “Eliza’s novel is a stunning, zeitgeisty tour de force and there’s nothing quite like it on the screen. Juno’s vision for the adaptation is bold and brilliant, and we’re delighted to be collaborating with her and Eliza to realise it.”

Screenwriter Juno Dawson: “Penance is a challenging novel and a challenging adaptation, but that’s what makes the project so irresistible to me. How to capture the mystery, the sly satire, the character studies, and tell this story in a form that no-one has ever seen before?”
