Alex Mahon has been promoted to the role of ceo of Shine Group. She will take over from Shine’s founder Elisabeth Murdoch who has served as both Chairman and ceo since the company’s inception in 2001.
Mahon will assume full responsibility for day to day management of the 28 operating companies within Shine Group. Murdoch will continue as group chairman leading Shine’s creative talent, culture and strategy. The changes are effective from September.
“As Shine further diversifies across genres, geographies and platforms, I believe that the continued growth of the company requires the chairman and ceo roles to be distinct and separate,” says Murdoch. “Alex has earned this new leadership position in recognition of her substantial contribution to Shine’s growth from a single UK based production company a decade ago to the global business we run today. The division of duties will focus Alex’s attention on managing the operational business whilst allowing me to concentrate on identifying future strategic opportunities.”
Mahon joined Shine Group in 2006 as managing director of Shine TV from talkbackTHAMES where she was coo with responsibility for all commercial and operational aspects of the company. Before that she was director of commercial development and strategy at FremantleMedia.
Shine Group companies include Dragonfly, Kudos, Princess Productions and Shine TV in the UK, Shine America and Nordic producer Metronome Film & Television.
Shine International, the group’s international distribution arm is responsible for the distribution of over 3,000 hours of broadcast content annually.
Over the last three years the group has established Shine Australia, Shine Germany, Shine France, and most recently Shine Iberia.
The group has also bought social gaming specialists Bossa Studios online broadcaster and original content producers ChannelFlip.
In May, Shine moved into the children’s entertainment genre in a co-venture with Teletubbies and In The Night Garden co-creator Andrew Davenport.
