Having taken on the inaugural four apprentices, as part of the newly launched Screen Lighting Technician Apprenticeship Scheme, MBS Equipment is welcoming the next intake of new entrants.

The two year programme comprises a combination of virtual and in-person training, which takes place alongside variety of workplace duties. Provided that targets are met, candidates receive placements with shooting and rigging crews, which count towards their final assessment to becoming a Level 3 Screen Lighting Technician.

The scheme, which has been developed by Screenskills and Access Creative, working in close partnership with leading industry practitioners, was officially launched in the UK earlier in the year. The introduction of the initiative marked an important step forward in ensuring the delivery of much needed, properly trained, technicians.

Initially driven by a consortium of crew, union reps, ScreenSkills and equipment vendors, known as the Trailblazer Group, this training programme is officially recognised by Skills England as the Apprenticeship Standard for a Level 3 Screen Lighting Technician.

Being formally recognised allows access to resources, via an established fund to which broadcasters and production contribute – essential investment, from within the production community, which is directly helping create a culture of continuity within the industry, supporting workforce sustainability and protecting the long term delivery of quality crew.

Toby Dare, MBSE Director Sustainability and Risk Management says, “Having helped create this important new programme, we are delighted to welcome this second cohort of apprentices at MBS Equipment Co. The introduction of the scheme provides invaluable an opportunity for new entrants to begin an exciting new stage in their career, and is an essential step towards creating a sustainable future within our industry.”

The inaugural group of apprentices have already completed their first six months training, working with MBSE, within various departments at the company’s European headquarters in Colnbrook, West London. The second group are due to join in September.

Darren Smith, MBS Group CEO EMEA, adds “We’re proud to have worked with the production industry for many years in creating workplace opportunities. It’s immensely rewarding to now be able to help nurture new talent and build a sustainable workforce, via this formerly recognised training scheme”.
