Sky Arts has commissioned a new three-part documentary series, Greatest Basslines, profiling guitar legends. The series is produced by Sony Music Vision, a division of Sony Music Entertainment.

The series explores the world of the bass, guided by three bassists: Peter Hook (Joy Division, New Order), Nate Mendel (Foo Fighters) and Melissa Auf der Maur (Hole, The Smashing Pumpkins). Each musician authors their own episode, deconstructing the iconic basslines that defined their careers while revealing the stories behind the strings. They also explore the grooves that inspired them, sharing the basslines that first turned them onto the instrument and shaped their playing.

Joining them is a supporting cast, including Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols), Mani (The Stone Roses), Gail Ann Dorsey (David Bowie), Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath), Deego (Fontaines D.C.), Victoria De Angelis (Måneskin), Guy Pratt (Pink Floyd/Madonna), Krist Novoselic (Nirvana), Adam Clayton (U2), Adrian Younge (Wu-Tang Clan, Kendrick Lamar) and Alex James (Blur), who bring their own stories, insights and exclusive performances to the series.

Phil Edgar-Jones OBE, Executive Director, Unscripted Originals, Sky said: “Listening to the bass is a visceral thing- a great bassline can get you in the groove like nothing else and Greatest Basslines shines a light on the instrument that drives so much of the music we love. It’s a chance to hear from the musicians who know it best, sharing the riffs that shaped their sound and changed the way we listen.”

Greatest Basslines will air on Sky Arts and streaming service Now on 28 November

Greatest Basslines was commissioned by Phil Edgar-Jones OBE, Executive Director, Unscripted Originals at Sky for Cécile Frot-Coutaz, CEO of Sky Studios & Chief Content Officer for Sky. The Commissioning Editor for Sky is Barbara Lee. Ian Sharpe serves as Executive Producer.
