Zinc Media’s Atomic Television is to make The Day Diana Died, a new 90-minute documentary for 5.

Marking the anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, the documentary will piece together the critical hours following the news of her death and examine the key decisions made by the Royal Household, newsrooms, and Tony Blair’s government in the wake of the tragedy.

Diana’s death remains one of the defining moments of the 20th century. The Day Diana Died will chronicle this historic day, from the moment the Queen was informed to the return of Diana’s body to British soil, providing a detailed and poignant account of the aftermath.

The documentary will reveal the countless decisions made in the immediate aftermath and unravel the narrative from the Royal Household, newsrooms, and the government at the time, shedding light on the complex network of responses that unfolded behind closed doors.

The film draws on extensive news coverage and interviews with figures such as Tina Brown, Colin Tebbutt, Dickie Arbiter, and Ian Hislop, along with fresh insights from key players including Graham Laurie, the pilot who flew Prince Charles to Paris and brought back Diana’s body, to Nik Gowing, the BBC news anchor who played a pivotal role in covering Diana’s death.

The Day Diana Died was commissioned for 5 by Lucy Willis, Commissioning Editor, Non-Scripted for 5 & Paramount Plus. It is Executive Produced by Stephen McQuillan.

Stephen McQuillan, Executive Producer said: We are delighted to be working with 5 to tell the incredible story of the day Diana died.  By interviewing a range of commentators and those who played a key role in one of the twentieth century’s most dramatic days, we hope to shed new light on an event that is remembered by everyone.
