53 Degrees Global has promoted Alex Coffey to the expanded role of Managing Director. The move “reflects the company’s growing activities across new television genres, live events, podcasting and online content.”
Coffey will work with 53 Degrees Global CEO Nick Bullen to oversee the group’s strategy of diversifying its revenue streams to take advantage of business opportunities in online content creation, branded and corporate programming, live event production in the UK and globally, as well as its television content labels.
In the last 12 months Coffey has driven 53 Degrees Global’s recent move into drama, through the creation of West Midlands based label Mill Bay Media. Headed by Will Trotter and Ollie Kent, the new label has already secured a commission from the BBC for a six-part series, The Hairdresser Mysteries, starring Sally Phillips, with other projects in development. Coffey has also been instrumental in securing international funding for a major blue-chip documentary from the group’s newest television content label Love Monday and has helped Birmingham-based Spun Gold TV win series recommissions from the BBC for two of its biggest brands. Additionally, Coffey works alongside BAFTA Film and TV Awards producer Penny Lane Entertainment’s creative head Lee Connolly on the group’s expansion into branded content across its output.
Through Coffey the group has also successfully pivoted to online content, managing social media channels for individuals and brands, together with podcasts, with the creation of new label Joy Peddlers. The digital-focused label produces equestrian podcast Talk Horse, hosted by Olympic eventer Pippa Funnell, and Made in Chelsea’s Tristan Phipps, now one of the UK’s most popular sports podcasts plus the newly released hit podcast for GenZ gardeners Martha Swales and Jamie Walton, Home Grown. Joy Peddlers is also creating further podcasts through a recently built podcast studio, which is also being used by external production companies.
Nick Bullen, CEO, 53 Degrees Global said: “Alex has been an integral part of 53 Degrees Global since its inception and has played a big role in overseeing its growth since then. As we continue to expand the group, especially into a wide range of revenue streams across digital, television, live events and corporate clients, he will be tasked with ramping up our business strategy to identify and take advantage of new opportunities in the changing media landscape.”
Alex Coffey, Managing Director, 53 Degrees Global added: “I have really enjoyed building this thriving group of companies, led by fantastically creative teams, and I’m now looking forward to working with them all to take 53 Degrees Global’s business into its next phase of growth across UK and globally.
