Channel 4 has commissioned King of Sunshine to make a Christmas special following the Bergen Oslo railway as it traverses from Norway’s coast to the capital in Nordic Train at Christmas.
The show, voiced by Hugh Bonneville, takes a scenic trip on the Bergen Line, meeting the staff, passengers and locals enjoying the wintry wonderland of Norway. The show follows the journey as the train travels from the photogenic city of Bergen, surrounded by ancient fjords and mountains, through the spectacular Nordic landscapes, including the snowy hills of Finse – home to one of Europe’s highest altitude hotels, before ending at the capital of Oslo.
The one-off special follows 2024’s Alpine Train at Christmas, which reached an aggregated audience of 3.03 million last December.
Nordic Train at Christmas is a 1 x 60’ special for Channel 4 from Salford-based indie King of Sunshine Productions with WPP Media’s Motion Entertainment. The special is executive produced by Sohail Shah, Managing Director of King of Sunshine Productions, and Series Producer is Gareth Fielding. Deep Sehgal is Executive Producer for Motion Entertainment. The programme is commissioned by Channel 4’s Jasper Hone, Commissioning Executive, Lifestyle, and Jo Street, Director of Commissioning, Nations & Regions and Head of Lifestyle.
Channel 4’s Jasper Hone comments: “We’re delighted to be working with King of Sunshine again following the success of ‘Alpine Train at Christmas’ last year. We’re excited for viewers to see the captivating landscape that lies between Norway’s two largest cities, and the amazing towns and places you can stop along the way.”
King of Sunshine Productions MD Sohail Shah comments: “The world-famous Bergen Line covers miles of stunning landscapes from Bergen to Oslo. We are thrilled to once again give Channel 4 viewers a behind the scenes Christmas treat, this time with a truly Nordic flavour.”
Deep Sehgal, Executive Producer for WPP Media’s Motion Entertainment adds: “It’s a genuine pleasure to board the Bergen Line for another magical armchair journey with the outstanding team at King of Sunshine.”
The programme was funded by Channel 4 and Motion Entertainment’s Diverse Indies Fund. The Diverse Indies Fund was set up to support small and medium-sized ethnically diverse-owned independent production companies to produce new projects. The fund is overseen by Vivienne Molokwu, Senior Commissioning Editor at Channel 4, with Deep Sehgal, Head of Creative Diversity at Motion Entertainment.
