Crime+Investigation has ordered a 2 x 60 true crime series documenting the 1990 Bank of England bond heist which saw a theft of £ 292 million.

The series was ordered by Hearst Networks’ Dan Korn, Vice President, Programming and Diana Carter, Commissioning Editor and Head of Talent.

Authored and written by Marcel Theroux (who last year fronted The Eunuch Maker for Crime+Investigation), Heist: Robbing the Bank of England will travel across the globe to tell the story which “spanned several continents over three decades, leaving many unanswered questions…until now.”

The production has secured all the key protagonists of the story, on both sides of the Atlantic and both sides of the law.

‘Heist: Robbing the Bank of England’ will be co-produced by Soho Studios Entertainment and Homecoming Studios, and content financing group, Krempelwood. The series will be distributed internationally by BossaNova.

The series will be the debut project from Homecoming Studios, a new production company set up by John Farrar, who left his role as Chief Creative Officer, Future Studios last year.

Homecoming will be headquartered in Leeds and has ambitions to create and produce long form and short form content.

Soho Studios was founded in 2023 by Ian Lamarra, Paul Sandler and Francis Ridley, receiving investment from Pantheon Media Group, part of WME’s unscripted group.

They recently produced Special Forces: Most Daring Missions narrated by Tom Hardy (Paramount+), Travels with Agatha Christie and Sir David Suchet (More Four/Britbox) and The Playboy Bunny Murder (ITV).

Lamarra will Exec Produce for Soho Studios, Farrar for Homecoming Studios, Korn and Carter for Hearst, Blair Krempel and Mark Wood for Krempelwood and BossaNova’s Paul Heaney for International versions. Series Director Sam Miller will also co-exec.

The series is expected to TX in Autumn 2025.

Dan Korn said: It seems inconceivable that the crucible of this country’s financial institutions, The Bank of England, could get robbed. But in 1990, it did, and for nearly £300m.  In partnership with Soho Studios, Homecoming Studios and Krempelwood, Crime+Investigation will lift the lid on the most audacious robbery in British history, to try and answer the question everyone wants to know: where did all the money go?

John Farrar said: “This is the unbelievable true story of the biggest heist you’ve never heard of. This commission embodies my vision for Homecoming – combining forensic and cinematic storytelling with the very best on and off-screen talent. After years of development, we were able to secure unprecedented access to both law enforcement and criminals at the heart of this mystery. I am beyond thrilled that this marks Homecoming’s first commission.”

Ian Lamarra said: “As the appeal of true crime grows beyond gruesome killing into true con and true caper, this forensic first-hand account of one of the world’s biggest heists, that took place in the UK, is breathtaking viewing. Marcel Theroux once again proves he’s one of TV’s foremost and fearless storytellers.

Krempelwood said: “We’re delighted to continue partnering with Crime+Investigation on high quality original programming, and it’s great to work with John and Ian again”

Marcel Theroux said: “The City Bonds robbery was not just one of the biggest thefts in history, it’s one of the strangest unsolved crimes I’ve ever encountered.  It started as an apparent mugging then quickly escalated into a vast global conspiracy involving the IRA, Colombian narco-terrorists and the mafia.  Lives were lost along the way, and its ringleader was never brought to justice.  But strangest of all, to this day, the police seem unsure whether the man behind it was a Mr Big, or a Mr Bean.”
