BBC Studios Productions is launching an AI Creative Lab – an initiative designed to introduce innovation across the company’s global content portfolio.
The AI Creative Lab will act as a dedicated hub for experimentation, bringing together AI specialists, creative talent and producers to explore how AI can unlock new possibilities – from concept development to production workflows.
The AI Creative Lab will support teams across its Scripted, Unscripted, Global Productions, Audio, and Kids & Family genres to experiment responsibly with rapidly expanding technologies.
As part of the launch, BBC Studios is actively recruiting a specialist team of AI creatives, technologists, and producers.
The BBC Group’s AI Principles will be at the core of BBC Studios approach to using AI through this new venture, underpinning the BBC’s public commitments about how Generative AI is adopted. This means BBC Studios will always act in the best interests of the public, prioritise talent and creativity, and be open and transparent.
From the fusion of CGI and pioneering wildlife filmmaking that resurrected the Jurassic era in Prehistoric Planet, to the Megadome camera that captured unique split-screen images of marine life both above and below the water for the landmark natural history series Blue Planet II, the BBC’s commercial production arm has deployed new technology to enhance its creative offering.
Recently, BBC Studios’ Brands & Licensing joint venture, BBC Maestro – a global online learning platform – harnessed advanced audio-visual AI technology to deliver a world-first Crime Writing course, featuring lessons from Agatha Christie herself, brought to life through her own words and likeness.
Zai Bennett, CEO and Chief Creative Officer, BBC Studios Productions says: “As a global producer, we believe the future of British storytelling lies at the crossroads of creativity and technology. The AI Lab is about doing just that – creating new worlds, new formats, and new ways to tell stories that matter, and a space where our teams can push boundaries, experiment fearlessly, and reimagine what’s possible. Throughout all this however, we’ll continue to ensure that innovation never compromises our editorial integrity or the deep respect we have for the rights of our creative talent and contributors.”
