George Kay (Killing Eve, The Hour) and Jim Field Smith (Endeavour, The Wrong Mans) are to showrun a new 12 part Netflix crime drama series filmed in four countries with each country segment produced in the local language.
Criminal is billed as a “police procedural with a unique premise: it takes place exclusively within the confines of a police interview suite. This stripped down, cat-and-mouse drama will focus on the intense mental conflict between the police officer and the suspect in question.”
The show is produced by Kay and Field Smith’s indie Idiot Lamp.
This procedural will comprise of 12 unique stories set in 4 different countries: France, Spain, Germany and the UK. The episodes will be in local language, written and directed by talent from their respective countries.
For the UK episodes, George Kay is writer, co-creator and executive producer and Jim Field Smith is director, co-creator and executive producer.
The three episodes set in France are written, directed and co exec produced by Frederic Mermoud (Spiral, The Returned). Antonin Martin-Hilbert (Nina, Black Spot) and Mathieu Missoffe (Black Spot, Profilage) are writers.
The German episodes will be directed and co exec produced by Oliver Hirschbiegel (Four Blocks, Downfall). Bernd Lange (Das Verschwinden) and Sebastian Heeg (Blaumacher) are the writers.
In the Spanish episodes, Mariano Barroso (El día de mañana, Todas las mujeres, Éxtasis) is director and co exec producer. Alejandro Hernández El autor, El día de mañana) and Manuel Martín Cuenca (El autor, Caníbal) are the writers.
All 12 episodes of Criminal will film at Netflix’s production hub at Ciudad de la Tele in Madrid.
