Topic Studios, is extending its US operations to the UK and has made its first strategic partnership in the territory with the newly launched factual content production company Puzzle Pictures, led by filmmaker Sam Hobkinson.
Topic is the film and television studio behind features A Real Pain, Spencer and Spotlight, as as well as documentary film and series 100 Foot Wave for HBO (pictured), It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, and the Oscar-shortlisted Folktales. Puzzle Pictures will focus on premium nonfiction content marketed towards global streamers and meeting audience demand for propulsive, cinematic documentary storytelling.
“I’m thrilled to take this bold new step with Topic Studios. Puzzle Pictures aims to be the leading light in modern documentary filmmaking – producing groundbreaking work, collaborating with top talent, nurturing new voices, and also partnering with companies worldwide to deliver creative guidance in an increasingly global field,” said Sam Hobkinson.
“Sam is one of the most distinctive voices working in nonfiction today,” said Christine Connor, SVP of Non-Fiction Series & Documentary at Topic Studios. “His work combines rigorous reporting with a cinematic sensibility that makes complex stories both propulsive and emotionally resonant. That approach aligns perfectly with the slate we’ve been building at Topic, and we’re thrilled to partner with him in launching Puzzle Pictures.”
The announcement follows multiple recent Topic Studios productions across Europe, including the feature Scorn, starring Adria Arjona and Kingsley Ben-Adir, written and directed by Sarah-Violet Bliss. The film wrapped production this month in Leeds.
Topic Studios expects to further expand its UK footprint through additional strategic partnerships with filmmakers, writers and producers to build new companies and develop a slate of premium projects designed for global audiences.
“As Topic continues to grow, expanding our presence in the UK allows us to build within one of the world’s most dynamic filmmaking communities,” said Ian Stratford, COO of First Look Media & Topic Studios. “We’re focused on building a studio that operates globally while maintaining close, long-term creative partnerships with exceptional filmmakers. Sam and Puzzle Pictures represent exactly that kind of collaboration.”
Founded and led by CEO Michael Bloom and headquartered in New York for over a decade, Topic Studios will continue its ongoing operations in North America to develop, produce, and finance premium film and television, with Stratford, Connor, and Head of Film and Documentary Ryan Heller overseeing a growing slate of projects globally.
Hobkinson’s documentary films Lover Stalker Killer (2024), Misha and the Wolves (2021), and series Fear City (2020) have all been hits for Netflix, with Fear City becoming a #1 Netflix show in the US, UK and Ireland and Lover Stalker Killer among the world’s most watched films of 2024.
