Sony Pictures-owned vfx and virtual production company, Pixomondo, is to be “wound down” by Sony.

PXO specialises in visualisation, virtual production and VFX for titles including Martin Scorsese’s Hugo and multiple seasons of HBO’s Game of Thrones to the recent House of the Dragon, Amazon’s The Boys, and Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4.

The company’s LED virtual production work includes House of the Dragon, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Reacher and Amazon’s critically acclaimed Cada Minuto Cuenta. PXO has seven creative studios and four LED volumes in the US, UK, Germany and Canada.

SPE shared its intent with Televisual to eventually close the Pixomondo ‘umbrella,’ and integrate some of its capabilities into other areas of Sony.

PXO’s VFX operations will close after the completion of any outstanding projects or contracts. SPE is then to “streamline VFX efforts internally to focus on its Imageworks capabilities.”

PXO’s virtual production division, Clara, will be wound down too. An SPE spokesperson said there is potential for some business initiatives associated with Sony Group to be transferred over. As with the vfx division, the closure will happen after outstanding contracts are fulfilled.

The R&D/Innovation part of the business, PXO Innovation, will be “absorbed” by Sony Group’s R&D operation.

SPE bought Pixomondo from its then owner, Mayfair Equity Partners, back in 2022. Then CEO Jonny Slow remained in his post. The former Zodiak Americas CEO, Slow, first became Pixomondo’s global chief executive officer in 2019. He announced his exit from the company in February this year.

SPE has informed staff of the moves today.
