Sky has ordered a new doc on British comedy icon Rik Mayall, Rik Mayall: Magnificent B’stard.
Rik Mayall: Magnificent B’stard is billed as the intimate story of one of the “funniest and most influential comedians Britain has ever produced – a man driven by punk spirit and an unrelenting commitment to pushing boundaries.”
When he died in 2014 at the age of 56, Rik Mayall left behind a body of ground-breaking work, from Rick the Poet and Kevin Turvey to The Young Ones, Bottom and The New Statesman.
The film explores Mayall’s comedic journey, his creative partnership with Adrian Edmondson, his complicated relationship with alcohol and the near-fatal quad bike accident that left him fighting not only for his life, but for his future.
Told through interviews with family, friends and closest collaborators, including Stephen Fry, Ben Elton, Greg Davies, Paul Jackson, John Lloyd, Nigel Planer and Adrian Edmondson, the film reveals the complex personality behind a performer driven to make people laugh, “whatever the cost.”
Family archive, unheard audio recordings and previously unseen sketches bring to life his creative process and “his influence that is still felt today.”
Rik Mayall: Magnificent B’stard is produced by Bohemia Films for Sky. Director and Producer is Todd Austin, Executive Producer is Min Clough, and Executive Producer for Sky is Jamie Morris.
