Most recently, she produced Insomnia for Left Bank Pictures/Paramount+; Who is Erin Carter? for Left Bank Pictures/Netflix as well as co-producing the fourth and final series of Killing Eve for Sid Gentle Films/AMC.

Essex has previously script exec’d the fourth series of Unforgotten (ITV); Gold Digger (BBC1) and has script edited numerous projects for all the main broadcasters. She also works as a freelance writer and is repped by Emilie Loldrup Hansen at Kitson Press Associates.

At Roughcut, she will develop her own slate of projects building on her existing relationships with key writing talent, as well as identifying and nurturing emerging writers.

Established in 2007 by Ash Atalla and Tim Sealey, comedy indie Roughcut Television recently expanded into drama and is developing a number of shows for all the major broadcasters and SVODs including Little Disasters which will air on Paramount+ in the new year and ratings hit Coma which aired on Channel 5 earlier this year. In July, Roughcut announced a first look and drama development deal with Fremantle.

Essex joins the drama team headed up by Roughcut CEO Ash Atalla, with creative director Alex Smith; head of drama Marianna Abbotts; development producer Claire Kaloy and development editor Issy Franklin.

Marianna Abbotts, head of drama said: “We are absolutely delighted that Charlotte has joined us as we embark on a new chapter in Roughcut’s journey. Charlotte is a talented, creative and hugely experienced executive producer, who will help expand our growing drama slate as we ramp up for further production next year.”

Charlotte said: “Roughcut has an incredible track record in comedy and I’m thrilled to be joining the company at a time when they’re expanding more into drama, after the success of Coma. I’m excited to be developing my own projects to add to the company’s slate as well as working with a hugely talented team.”
