Composer Hans Zimmer, alongside Magical Society, Bleeding Fingers and Screen Academy Bradford are inviting budding media composers from Bradford and the wider four counties of Yorkshire (West, South, North and East Riding) to apply for a placement opportunity and a chance to work with Hans Zimmer and the Bleeding Fingers Team on the television score for BBC One’s upcoming detective drama series VIRDEE.

As well as being part of the overall Screen Academy Bradford initiative, the chosen composer(s) will spend a week in Los Angeles with the Bleeding Fingers composer team, mentored by Zimmer, to get hands-on experience of composing for the screen.

Composer Hans Zimmer says, “I cannot wait to see what new talent Screen Academy Bradford’s Composer Programme uncovers and what they might bring to help shape the sound of Virdee with the Bleeding team.”

Hopeful candidates who were born, raised or currently live in the Bradford area and surrounding four Yorkshire counties, who love film and TV and have original musical ideas on how they think the musical score for this series should feel, are being asked to submit a short (up to 1 min) piece of music via this link by midnight, Sunday 10 December 2023:

A decision will be made on the successful applicants by Friday 15 December with a view to starting the initial part of the placement and participate in the Screen Academy Bradford Skills Bootcamp in January 2024.

Novelist and screenwriter of Virdee AA Dhand says: “This is an incredible opportunity for the right emerging musical talent to really make a mark in the industry and gain invaluable experience working with arguably one of the world’s greatest living composers.”

With skills training to be funded by West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin adds: “We’re funding this amazing training programme with Bradford Council as part of our work to build a stronger, brighter West Yorkshire.  I want the next generation of talent to gain the skills they need to step into the rising number of well-paid creative industry jobs across the region.  The support of the iconic Hans Zimmer will be an incredible opportunity for our young composers to learn from the best.”

VIRDEE (6 x 60’) is adapted for the screen by AA Dhand with Sacha Dhawan in the lead role. The series is executive produced by Paul Trijbits, AA Dhand, Caroline Cooper Charles for Screen Yorkshire and Jo McClellan for the BBC, and produced by Stella Nwimo (Top Boy, Gangs of London). The co-producers are Gareth Coulam Evans, Callum Dodgson, Sylvie Richards and Karl Hall. Virdee is a Magical Society production in association with Screen Yorkshire for BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Cineflix Rights is the exclusive worldwide distribution partner.
