Adam Gee will be joining Documentary Campus as the new Head of Masterschool, its longest-standing training programme.
The programme will expand its scope to embrace emerging business models, digital-first content, creative application of AI and enhanced global outreach.
Prior to joining London indie Doc Hearts as Head of Content, Gee was a Commissioning Editor at CAA (Creative Artist Agency). His 20-year commissioning career also includes being a long-time Commissioning Editor at Channel 4 and the first Commissioning Editor of original programming at Little Dot Studios.
The Emmy and BAFTA winner served on BAFTA’s Television and Interactive Entertainment committees, is a voting member of the European Film Academy and was appointed an Honorary Fellow of NUA (Norwich University of the Arts) “for services to the UK Broadcast and Interactive Media industry”.
Adam Gee said, “Film and TV are never going to snap back to how they were. But when edifices crumble, gaps open between and that’s where the future lies. There are spaces in the digital realm where you can feel a real creative fizz at the moment and they offer huge potential, global and local, mainstream and niche, for where factual can and is progressing and finding its newest forms and models.
“Moving forward, the Masterschool will build on what it already does so well, to reflect the realities and opportunities of how things are evolving in the world of factual production.”
Documentary Campus Managing Director Donata von Perfall said, “For 24 years, the Masterschool has been a cornerstone of training for factual producers, nurturing some of the brightest talents in the industry. This marks the beginning of a transformative era for the Masterschool, one that embraces the opportunities of a rapidly evolving digital landscape while continuing to inspire and empower the next generation of factual storytellers.”
To mark this new appointment, applications for Masterschool 2025 have been extended until 15 December 2024. Through 1-on-1 mentorship, workshops, masterclasses, networking events and industry pitches, participants refine and optimise a factual project in development, whilst also receiving advice on strengthening the commercial viability of their production company.
Past participants of Masterschool include Oscar-nominated Flee, festival darling Notes on Blindness and VR Into Darkness, and many more.
