CMG Productions’ feature documentary Ghostwatch has been picked up by 5.
The documentary explores the story behind the BBC’s infamous Halloween broadcast that convinced millions of viewers they were witnessing a real paranormal investigation, instigating one of the most significant public backlashes against the broadcaster in history.
At 9.25pm on 31 October 1992, families across Britain settled in for what looked like a genuine live investigation in a haunted suburban home. As the programme unfolded, the scares crept in and then escalated. Convinced they were witnessing the supernatural in real time, viewers – many of them children watching with their parents – were left genuinely terrified.
The backlash was immediate, with the BBC receiving an estimated 50,000 complaints, a weeks-long tabloid frenzy, and, in 1994, the British Medical Journal citing it as the first television programme to cause PTSD in children.
The documentary was quickly buried but has become a cult landmark, recognised as a blueprint for the found-footage horror that followed, from The Blair Witch Project to Paranormal Activity. New audiences and cult horror fans have since discovered the programme via TikTok over 30 years later.
Featuring exclusive interviews with creator Stephen Volk, presenter Craig Charles, television critics and audiences who experienced the original broadcast first-hand, Ghostwatch explores how one night’s television became a cultural phenomenon whose legacy continues to shape horror, broadcasting and public trust in the media.
The documentary is executive produced by CMG Productions’ Claire McArdle and Rebecca Knight, and developed and produced by India Woods. Ghostwatch is filmed and directed by Toby Roebuck (The Football Fraudster, Royal Histories) and was commissioned by Federico Ruiz, Commissioning Editor, 5 and Damian O’Hara, Senior Acquisitions Manager for 5; and Jonathan Ford for Sphere Abacus.
The documentary will air on 5 later this year and Sphere Abacus will handle international distribution.
Claire McArdle, Co-Founder and CEO at CMG says “Ghostwatch was one of the seminal TV viewing moments of my teens, a real “did I remember that right?!” moment so it’s been fantastic to relive every terrifying second of one of the greatest dramas in British TV history and explore the impact it has had in the decades since broadcast.”
Damian O’Hara, Senior Acquisitions Manager at 5/Paramount says “Ghostwatch became something of a TV legend after transmission, and its creation – and even the events of the broadcast itself – were shrouded in mystery for years. So to have the ability to delve back into the nostalgia of Halloween 1992 with CMG and Abacus was a wonderful opportunity to bring such a unique and often unbelievable story to the 5 audience.”
Jonathan Ford, Managing Director at Sphere Abacus says “We’re extremely pleased to be working with the team at CMG Productions. They have created a fascinating documentary which highlights just how much television legislation has necessarily changed over the years yet the question remains – should we believe everything we see on our screens?”
Ghostwatch joins a growing slate of documentary projects developed by CMG Productions across sport, music, culture, crime and human-interest storytelling. Founded by former Paramount executives Claire McArdle and Rebecca Knight, CMG develops, produces and commercialises original IP while collaborating with partners worldwide to create globally relevant content and unlock international co-production opportunities.
