Anjli Mohindra, Shaun Parkes and Aidan Gillen will lead the cast of ITV’s legal thriller, Saviour, which is produced by Nisha Parti’s indie, Parti Productions, and Drama Republic in association with All3Media International.
The six-part series will be executive produced by Peter Moffat (Criminal Justice, Silk, Your Honour) and Nisha Parti and is written by criminal barrister, novelist and screenwriter Imran Mahmood.
Parti Productions has partnered with Drama Republic (Riot Women, One Day, Doctor Foster,) to co-produce.
ITV’s Director of Drama Polly Hill has commissioned the series which will air on ITV, STV and stream on ITVX and STV Player.
Polly Hill commented: “I’m delighted to be working with Nisha Parti whose work I have long admired, and I’m really proud of the fact this is Imran Mahmood’s first TV drama. Alongside Nisha, we are lucky to have the brilliant Peter Moffat and the team at Drama Republic bringing this fantastic drama to screen. The casting of Anjil, Shaun and Aidan is exceptional. This is going to be a really exciting new drama that I am confident the audience will love.”
In developing Saviour for ITV, Nisha Parti has worked closely with writer Imran Mahmood, a full-time criminal barrister, to create an authentic drama set in the world of the criminal justice system.
The production, shooting across Liverpool, is being produced by Matthew Patnick (The Night Manager, You) and brought to life by directors Leanne Welham (Pachinko, The Trial of Christine Keeler) and Annetta Laufer (The Forsytes, Get Millie Black). Frances Poletti (Without Sin) and Namsi Khan (Virdee, True Detective) will also write episodes for the series.
Saviour follows Ben, played by Archie Fisher (Death by Lightning, Steve, Boarders), who after borrowing his dad’s police uniform for a costume party, gets into an altercation that results in a man’s death. Called to represent Ben is brilliant criminal defence solicitor Indy Sangar, played by Anjli Mohindra (Fear, Get Millie Black, The Red King), who has just been promoted to Higher Rights of Audience in the Old Bailey.
In defending Ben from an allegation of murder, Indy is confronted with a world of police corruption, complicated racial politics, fervent press interest, a frustratingly traditional justice system and a defendant who is keeping secrets from her. But what she doesn’t know is that, whilst fighting tooth and nail for Ben’s freedom, deeply personal secrets of her own are finally coming to the surface and threatening to tear her career and her family apart.
Indy is also up against a formidable adversary in Detective Inspector Jon Creasy, played by Shaun Parkes (Death by Lightning, The Suspect, Lost in Space, Mangrove). Determined to get to the truth, he won’t be swayed by Eddie, played by Aidan Gillen (Mayor of Kingstown, Game of Thrones and Kin), his colleague and Ben’s father, who is ruthlessly intent on clearing his son’s name and will go to any lengths to protect him.
The Saviour cast also includes Abhin Galeya (Grace, Unforgotten, Maternal) as Indy’s husband Dev Sangar, Tobias Jowett (William Tell, Virdee, Gassed Up) as Sai Bajwa, Nethra Tilakumara (Tell Me Everything, Flatmates, So Awkward) as Nita Sangar, Angus Wright (Bank of Dave, Mary & George, Dreaming Whilst Black) as Lionel Knight, Claire Goose (Silverpoint, The Coroner) as Romy, Adjani Salmon (Dreaming Whilst Black, Doctor Who, Chivalry) as Mac, Campbell Wallace (Midas Man, G’wed, Anne) as Bing and Precious Wura Alabi (Boiling Point) as Xenia.
Nisha Parti commented: “I am so thrilled to see this show finally becoming a reality thanks to the brilliant talents of Imran and Peter. I’m grateful to Polly Hill for believing in the script at the very early stages of development, and for Drama Republic coming on board to help steer the ship smoothly. I’d also like to thank All3Media International and the Liverpool City Region Production Fund as our additional financiers. Having Anjli, Shaun and Aidan, as well as so many other talented and diverse names working with our two very classy female directors to complete the Saviour family is a dream come true. I cannot wait to share the show with everyone.”
The series will be distributed internationally by All3Media International who are the production’s global partner.
The production is receiving support and investment from Liverpool Film Office through its Liverpool City Region Production Fund.
