SIS Live has been on the acquisitions trail, snapping up both O21 and Dales Broadcast in recent months and substantially adding to its already extensive inventory of HD trucks. On top of this, it unveiled two newly built HD trucks and six mobile broadband units and is set to launch “the largest OB truck we’ve ever built, with full dual-zone production capability” in Spring this year, says head of commercial Phil Aspden.

CTV has invested around £15m in its OB facilities over the last four years and now has a large fleet of HD trucks. An additional £1m has been earmarked for the coming year for additional cameras and upgrades to existing OB units. “CTV performed better in 2009 than in 2008, while in 2010 we’re providing host OB services at the FIFA World Cup and The Ryder Cup in addition to our usual business,” says general manager Adam Berger.

NEP Visions invested £3m last year alone on cameras and monitors. Furthermore, it’s currently building two large, tapeless, 3Gb/s-ready HD trucks, which will be complete in July. The two trucks together provide the same operating space as three standard OB trucks. The vehicles have been commissioned by Sky Sports and, once ready, will give NEP Visions “one of the largest HD fleets in Europe,” says Brian Clark, commercial and technical projects director.

Arena added another two HD OB vehicles to its fleet last year and also invested in two VTR units and 24 Sony HD camera channels, totalling an investment of just over £9m. It’s planning a further spend of £5.4m this year on another OB truck, a VTR truck and 18 camera channels. The company gained a series of contracts in 2009, including Football on Five, Beat the Star and The Album Chart Show. And, says md Richard Yeowart, it’s been “shortlisted for tenders to start this year worth an extra £7m a year.”

Telegenic gained invaluable experience in stereo 3d over the last year or so, providing OB services for an assortment of stereo 3d productions, including Keane at Abbey Road. It has since won the tender to facilitate 3d for Sky and, as a result, is now investing heavily in stereo 3d kit, spending £4m on a 3d-specific OB truck, to be on the road by April. “The future looks exciting and consumers are in for a whole new viewing experience,” says Telegenic unit manager Eamonn Curtin.

Boris TV

Rather than offering full size OB trucks, Boris TV specialises in OB trailers, well suited for smaller productions and where space is limited. Over the last year, Boris TV has upgraded and re-built inhouse its main HD unit to enable the handling of up to eight camera channels, at a cost of around £20k. Next to be upgraded is its HD vision mixing equipment, and it’s also investing in additional lenses, including telephoto and macro lenses, to “suit the increased demand for special optics,” says md Christopher Smith. Bookings for 2010 are up 25% on last year, says Smith.

Barcud Derwen
Trucks HD x 2, SD x 2

Barcud Derwen’s OB facilities cover many Welsh TV productions requiring OB services, including a long list of shows for Rondo Media and Boomerang+. Its first fully HD truck, HD1, was designed inhouse, with the assistance and input of leading manufacturers, and includes customised equipment and “unique gadgets”. It is currently planning the design of a forthcoming 20 camera HD unit, due on the road by Spring 2011. The budgeted cost for the truck is around £2.5m.
