Production Technology Survey, 2017 Back to Reports & survey Listing

For the first time, more than half of our respondents said they have shot in 4K over the past year. However, the rise of 4K shooting is slow. Last year, 48% said they had shot in the format; this year it is only 51%.  A greater number (62%) think they will shoot in 4K over the next year.

The slow rate of take up in production is because very few broadcasters are yet broadcasting in 4K. Those who are shooting in 4K do so because they want to future proof their productions, or to achieve the best quality visuals possible for a high-end doc, drama, commercial or film. 4K also gives greater flexibility in the edit in terms of cropping, re-framing, grading and vfx.
