3 Mills, London
‘Nine filming stages, 30 minutes from Soho’ is the big selling point of 3 Mills. Set amid period buildings on an island in East London, it’s had a busy year thanks to high-end TV drama productions from the US and the UK. It also attracts stop-motion animation features, plus theatre rehearsals. MasterChef has been at 3 Mills for three years.

BBC Studioworks, London
Commercially run, and open to shows from all broadcasters, BBC Studioworks will return to its home at the revamped Television Centre when it reopens in September – while maintaining its Elstree presence. TVC has three studios on a site with bars, restaurants and a hotel; The Jonathan Ross Show will be one of the first to film there.
Facilities Five studios (7,500 sq ft to 15,770 sq. ft) at Elstree; full HD facilities; dressing rooms, green rooms and production office facilities; editing facilities.

Bottle Yard, Bristol
Business continues to be buoyant at The Bottle Yard, the Bristol studio. It hosted nine different productions at one time last year, and now has 20 companies on site providing support services. The Bottle Yard also won investment from Bristol Council for site improvements.
Facilities Eight stages from 7,000 – 22,000 sq ft; min height 27 ft, max 70 ft; green screen; back lot; costume & make up rooms; offices.

BT Sport Studios, London
Based in modern facilities in the Olympic Park, BT’s studios are available to hire to indies making shows for other broadcasters. Key selling points include 100+ lines of video connectivity as well as live 4K UHD facilities. It makes them ideal for live and complex productions. Timeline TV assists in the external hire of the studios.
Facilities Three studios (1,900 sq ft to 10,000 sq ft); excellent video and network connectivity; 9 production control rooms; 24 Avid edit suites

Dock10, Salford
Based at MediaCity in Salford, Dock10 offers one of the UK’s largest purpose-built TV studios. There’s plenty of facilities on offer, including a suite of post services and two audio studios. Head of studios Andy Waters says there is still a great appetite for studio shows, and that it’s seen growth with more indies coming to Dock10 to create studio content.

Ealing Studios, London
A legendary name in studios, Ealing opened for business in 1902 and has been in use ever since - most recently with dramas like The Durrells and Taboo. Stage two was built in 1931 and is a classic sound stage, while stages 3A and 3B went up in 1933 and can combine into an 11,900 sq ft space.
Facilities Five stages, ranging from 924 - 11,900 sq ft; wardrobes, dressing rooms, hair and make up rooms, prop stores and workshops as well as office space.

Elstree, Borehamwood

Elstree is home to Strictly Come Dancing and is popular because of its close proximity to London and because two of its stages are some of the biggest in the UK. It is about to build a new 21,000 sq ft stage. Elstree has a partnership with BBC Studioworks, which provides technical expertise.
Facilities Seven film and TV stages. Its two biggest stages are 15,770 sq ft each, and 50ft high. Studios have production galleries, wardrobe, make-up and dressing rooms.

The Hospital, London
Centrally located, The Hospital is a Covent Garden studio that’s part of an upscale club with accommodation, restaurants and bars. Compact and high tech, it offers broadcast facilities for live or pre-recorded shows. The studio is two floors below street level, and is used for music and chat shows, performances and interviews.
Facilities A 2,700 sq ft studio with a floating floor, a full lighting rig and the capability to pre-record or broadcast live.

IMG Studios, Uxbridge
IMG Studios is based in a Norman Foster-designed building, so has a comfortable and modern working environment. The facility offers both media production and broadcast services. Growth has come from live events presentation, channel hosting and TV and corporate productions. 
Facilities 4 x HD broadcast TV studios: 2 x 2,000 sq ft and 2 x 1,000 sq ft; 9 galleries for live production; 72 Avid edit suites and audio post; worldwide connectivity.

The London Studios, London
The London Studios is set to close next year when ITV redevelops the site for its own use. It’s a shame, because TLS is the biggest ‘proper’ TV studios in central London. Its location and size make it a popular choice for entertainment shows because it is so convenient for talent and audiences.
Facilities Six studios ranging from 2,050 sq ft to 8,350 sq ft. Purpose built multi studio complex with dedicated support facilities.

Maidstone Studios, Kent
Maidstone has two HD studios: at 12,000 sq ft, Studio 1 is one of the UK’s largest TV floors, making it a good space for big shows. Studio 2 is 6,000 sq ft and good for medium/large productions. Maidstone is well connected too, with an impressive array of satellite communication facilities. Growth is coming from TV entertainment and games shows, and there’s been some drama and ad enquiries too. 
Facilities Two studios (12,000 sq ft and 6,000 sq ft); edit facilities; Foley dubbing suite; offices; 37 dressing rooms; private cinema; restaurant.

Mount Pleasant, London
A small, centrally located London studios used mainly by commercials, corporate and promo clients. It has 1,250 sq ft of sound proofed shooting space. The studio is 100% powered by renewable energy. Summer 2016 was quiet, but 2017 has been busy so far, says stage manager Simon Carter.

Pinewood Group, Iver Heath

The big name in UK studios, Pinewood continues to get bigger. The group now has 40 film and TV stages across three sites: Pinewood, Shepperton and Cardiff. Five new stages opened last July at Pinewood. Buoyed by record levels of film production, Pinewood has just applied for planning permission to build another three stages.

Pacific Quay, Glasgow
BBC Scotland’s HQ in Glasgow has a range of studios. Studio A is billed as one of the largest HD studio outside London at 8,417 sq ft, with audience seating for 320 and purpose built end to end digital technology. Studio B can be used for smaller shows and comes with a lighting rig.

Space Studios Manchester, Manchester
A purpose built production stage complex, Space Studios Manchester (formerly The Space Project) is investing £14m to expand. A new 30,000 sq ft sound stage opens by the end of the year. It’s also building 40,000 sq ft of units for supply chain businesses to TV and film. companies.
Facilities Five stages (9,000-11,000 sq ft); a new 30,000 sq ft stage is being built, plus 40,000 sq ft of business units; dressing and make up facilities; laundry; prop storage; workshops; offices; canteen.

Spectrecom, Kennington
Spectrecom’s London location makes it a popular draw for TV shows through to commercials, promos and car shoots. One of its studios has a green screen with infinity cove. Head of studios Ben Gardner says its biggest growth areas are “live streaming and tapping into our teams expertise in visual effects”.

Titanic, Belfast
Best known for hosting Game of Thrones, Titantic Studios are based on the site of a former shipyard in Belfast. The set has hosted international productions such as Your Highness and City of Ember.
Facilities The Paint Hall - four 16,000 sq ft “cells” set out in a square and connected by an internal road and streets. Each cell is 90ft tall. The Hurst and MacQuitty stages comprise two 21,000 sq ft spaces, with an eaves height of 43ft incorporating acoustic fabric, high-level walkways and rigging gantries with power, lighting and internal environment options.

Twickenham, Twickenham
With a good location, a boutique atmosphere and excellent facilities, Twickenham is a popular home for UK indie features. It has also benefitted from the growth in high-end TV drama. The past year has seen it open a private members club, new production offices and a fourth re-recording theatre. The outlook, says COO Maria Walker, is “extremely good.”
Facilities Three sound stages; three Dolby Atmos sound mixing theatres; one Foley/ADR theatre; 2K/4K Baselight theatrical and TV grading facility.

Warner Bros Studios, Leavesden
Orginally a WWII aircraft factory, Leavesden began a new life as a film studio in 1994 – going on to be the base for all eight Harry Potter films. Warner Bros bought the studios in 2010 and has invested heavily since, with Leavesden becoming a major base for Hollywood shoots. It books in commercials to fill any gaps. It is planning to build more sound stages, workshops and parking.
Facilities 13 sound stages; 100 acre clear horizon backlot; external water tank and indoor heated water tank; offices, dressing room, workshops, mill; Starbucks and cafe with seating for 1200.

West London, Hayes

West London says it has had an increase in enquiries, interest and confirmations for its stage space over the past year. The studio was disappointed after ITV’s The Halcyon was cancelled after just one series, but it is now hoping to take on bigger productions 
to maximise its studio space.
 West London says it is investing heavily to increase its power supply this year.
Facilities Five sound reduced stages, production offices, art depts. Canteen, prop stores, workshops, parking.

Wimbledon Studios, Wimbledon
Under new management, Wimbledon offers two stages close to central London. It’s also home to a purpose built, permanent exterior street set which has terraced housing, a fully dressed pub, shop and takeaways. The new management has improved the roofing, offices and upgraded the power.
Facilities Two sound stages: Studio 1 is 7,000 sq ft, Studio 2 is over 8,000 sq ft; office suites; workshops; costume facilities; dressing rooms; hair and make 
up facilities.
