Hogarth, which is part owned by WPP, calls itself a ‘marketing implementation agency.’ It has carved out a good business that’s largely based around localising and reversioning commercials campaigns in TV, digital and print media for different worldwide territories for WPP’s ad agencies. As part of the offer, it also provides language and script ‘transcreation’ services, subtitling, and complex asset management services. It’s a growing business that has seen the company expand its London facilities, as well as having offices in Singapore, Hong Kong, New York, Mexico City, Buenos Aires and Bucharest. Hogarth’s growth has had an impact on the bottom line of other commercials post houses, which traditionally have handled this kind of work.

Absolute has steadily grown from a boutique commercials vfx house, set up by ex-The Mill Flame artist David Smith in 2004, to a much larger concern with an offshoot branch in New York. Absolute has complemented its core commercials work with a number of interactive and augmented reality projects. Managing director Andy Barmer says the highpoint of the year was winning a Cannes Golden Lion for its digital billboard for the Pennies for Life campaign

Recognised for its expertise in 3d production and post, Onsight works in TV, film, music and live events and has impressive credits to its name. Operations director Andy Shelley says the year started fairly slowly, but has gained momentum from the spring onwards. Credits include David Attenborough’s Kingdom of Plants 3d.

Shoreditch-based Splice is popular with production companies based in East London. It’s recently expanded, opening up a new floor with eight more Avid suites and an additional grading theatre. The new floor has already been used by Warp Films for E4 series The Midnight Beast and Fresh One’s C4 series Jamie’s 15 Minute Meals. Splice says the expansion has increased its capacity by a third and that it is looking to expand further in 2013. “We have been able to work on more films and drama due to the grading theatre,” says Splice’s Romana Waliczek.Splice has 35 full time staff on its books, and says 70% of its work is in TV, 10% in film and 10% in corporate.

West London-based Crow TV has carried out a series of upgrades this year that will allow it to offer file-based delivery to broadcasters. “Alongside refining our client experience, we have focused on increasing performance through technology upgrades,” says new md Max McGonigal.

Unit opened up to great fanfare six years ago with its entirely Apple-equipped editing rooms, but this year has now also chosen to invest in Avid’s Media Composer 6, citing client demand for professional-grade editing services. The change to Avid is part of a move to bring in higher-profile projects and position itself as a top-end Soho facility. Next year, Unit plans to add an extra grading suite, two audio suites and more seats in its vfx department.60% of Unit’s work is in TV, and it employs 50 full-time staff.

The Pinewood Studios Group bills itself as a one stop shop where you can walk in with a script and walk out with a finished TX master. Offering both its famous studios and post production services, it has sought to increase the number of projects that make use of full production and post production. Pinewood’s Nigel Bennett says: “ If you’re producing film, TV, games or new media content we can manage your assets from their inception all the way through to distribution, in any format and in more than 40 different languages.”
