Facilities 50 2012 Back to Reports & survey Listing

Which post houses do producers use? Tim Dams sifts through hundreds of responses from TV, ad and corporate producers to reveal their favourite post houses.

Producers are spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting a post house to work with. The UK market teems with post production companies vying to work with them. Indeed, it’s an oversupplied market.

So one useful way of working out how to select the right post production company from such a huge pool of possible suppliers is to find out what other producers think of them.

Over the following pages, Televisual has rounded up extensive producer feedback from its annual surveys of TV, commercials and corporate producers (the Production 100, Commercials 30 and Corporate 50) to reveal the companies they work with most and, crucially, rate most highly. (See How the Producer Poll Works, below).

Clearly, the poll favours the larger, very good facilities houses that can pick up more votes as more producers pass through them.  So it may miss off smaller, boutique outfits that can offer exceptional levels of client service – but for just a few clients.
But the poll is still a handy guide to help identify which post houses have a strong reputation for their work.

Envy
Envy takes poll position as overall producers favourite yet again. Its scale, size and professionalism means it attracts many votes from TV and corporate as well as from some commercials producers.
Envy has “an amazing roof terrace, great facilities, a good team and flexible rates,” says one TV producer.  A superindie client says Envy is “a large facility with good capacity so can be flexible and has long-standing skilled staff,” while another describes Envy as “very high quality and open to negotiations on price.” It’s “consistently good” reckons another, with “great producer back up and they’re flexible.”  A corporate client says Envy are “excellent all rounders – they will always do their very best to look after you,” while another says they have “great facilities and experienced knowledgeable staff.”
Such is Envy’s scale and reach in the market, that a rival post outfit describes them as “the Foxtons of post production.”  Accordingly, a number of producers say they like Envy, but that it is too expensive. One comments: “I go there when I can afford it!”
But not all agree that it is too expensive. One TV producer comments that Envy has “excellent post production producers, excellent buildings and equipment, great customer service”, adding that his “close working relationships with the sales team helps to enable cost efficiencies in post production while maintaining quality.”

The Mill
The Mill comes in second place overall, thanks to a strong showing amongst commercials and corporate producers. Commercials producers rate The Mill for its “excellent creative work” and for being “reliable and honest”. Another comments that The Mill has “great artists and does brilliant work”. For corporate clients, The Mill is “top of the tree” and impresses for its “creative and technical excellence.”

MPC
MPC is one of the most admired facilities houses in the country, earnings its high overall ranking thanks to its strong showing with commercials producers. Indeed, it tops the list as the ad producers favourite this year. MPC does “the very best creative work,” reckons one commercials producer. Others say that MPC “has good operators and is diligent”, is “flexible on price and efficient” and is “great at finding solutions.” One adds: “Agencies generally like it there.”

Framestore
Framestore is next up in the overall producers poll, boosted by numerous votes from commercials producers. “Framestore is great at character animation,” says one. Another reports that it has “fantastic operators and we have a great long term relationship with them.” Framestore “always delivers beyond expectations” and “produces top work in all fields and are a great bunch of people.” Framestore wins the vote of another ad producer for its “relationships and track record.” One comments that “it has an excellent attitude to developing new directing talent”, noting that senior producer Simon Gosling should “take credit for long range strategic thinking.”

The Farm
Broadcast-focused post house The Farm earns many votes for its work from TV producers. “The Farm’s creative talent is matched by producers and schedulers who help producers,” says one indie. Another picks out The Farm’s “great client service and great location.” This client service is noted by another indie, who cites The Farm for its “efficient service, good editors and flexibility with deals.” Others comment on the post house’s “technology and facilities.” Commercials producers like The Farm too for its “brilliant facilities and great rates.”

Prime Focus

Prime Focus makes it into the top 10 rankings for both TV and commercials producers, placing third and fifth respectively. A TV indie credits Prime Focus for “keeping up to date with the latest technology and working closely with the team to deliver,” adding that it “can handle very tight deadlines.” Others cite Prime Focus’ “attention to detail” and pick it out for its “good all round, competitive deals and excellent dub.” Prime Focus’ “flexibility, geography, agreeable rates and good relations” wins it another TV producer vote, while one says it is good for “budget and customer service.” Meanwhile, numerous commercials producers single out Prime Focus for being a “big house that appears to care” and for being “reliable” and “lovely people.”  A corporate producer adds that it has “great talent.”

Glassworks
Glassworks comes seventh overall in the producer rankings, buoyed by a very strong showing in the commercials producer poll.  The post house is “highly creative and never lets you down,” says one, while another picks it out for its “excellent 3D” and for being “friendly”. One ad producer reckons that Glassworks is “very creative and helpful with budgets” and is a big fan of boss Hector Macleod. “Hector is a brilliant guy and they put so much into every job.”

Evolutions
Evolutions puts in a good showing thanks to votes from TV indies and corporate producers. One indie TV producer offers the following citation: “Lovely people, great facilities that rarely let you down. They have the right people and attitude to find solutions to almost any technical or creative challenge. Their rates are very competitive too.” Many of these points are echoed by another indie: “Very good relationship with sales managers, competitive quotes and deals, ability to deal with volume and good work flows with our post production department.” A corporate client, meanwhile, describes Evolutions as “reliable and professional.”

Molinare
Molinare has done very well with TV producers this year, coming fourth in the rankings. Molinare has “great front of house support,” says one indie. Another likes its “great facilities and brand new space including offices and cutting rooms.”

Storm HD
Storm puts in a good showing with TV and corporate producers. According to one TV client, Storm is “a boutique facility with skilled technical staff. Its supportive, flexible and cost effective solutions are offered regardless of budget.” Another calls Storm “flexible and helpful.”

Others in TV producers’ top 10

Shoreditch based Splice ranks in joint fifth place in the TV poll. It’s cited for its “flexibility, rates, and location,” by one indie, and – similarly – for its “proximity and competitive rates,” by another. Deluxe 142 is next, credited by one indie for offering “full post under one roof with dedicated staff and great technicians.”  Clear Cut takes joint eighth place, singled out for its “large range of facilities and reasonable prices” by one indie. Clear Cut are “very nice to deal with and flexible” says another. And, in tenth place, is Halo Post – the same position as last year. “It’s always keen to make schedules work,” says one of the indies that rates it.

Others in ad producers’ top 10

Rushes ranks sixth in the ad producers poll. According to one producer, Rushes is “collaborative and helpful with budgets – after many years of working together we continue to challenge each other with confidence which creates great work.” Rushes md Joce Capper is a draw too. “We love Joce!”, says one client. Absolute Post and Finish are in joint seventh place. Clients clearly like Absolute’s “small, boutique, personal service” and say it has “great people with an excellent work ethic.” And Finish is rated for its “outstanding work.” Similarly, ninth place Big Buoy is selected by one ad producer for its “boutique caring service that rates the creative as much as its net worth – and Jim Allen is a formidable talent.”

Others in corporate producers’ top 10
Fitzrovia performs very strongly with corporate producers this year, taking second place. It’s “very accommodating, always helpful and friendly” and the staff “take a genuine interest in your projects and make them the best they can be.” Others too choose Fitzrovia for the “quality of their staff”. It’s a “friendly open, specialist operation that goes the extra mile.” Fourth place Air Post is “always good on price and flexible to fit work in at short notice.” Meanwhile, 422 is noted for its “high technical standards”. One corporate indie says of 422: “good service and I like the people.” Azimuth, meanwhile, is described as “very friendly, welcoming and accommodating.” And Bravo Post is chosen for its “talented staff.”
