The BBC has acquired the Irish thriller Clean Sweep for BBC Four and BBC iPlayer.

The six-part thriller is the first ever original scripted series from Irish production company ShinAwiL. The series stars Charlene McKenna (Bloodlands, Peaky Blinders, Vienna Blood) and was created by Gary Tieche (Preacher, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Medium).

Inspired by true events, Clean Sweep follows a seemingly ordinary housewife, Shelly Mohan (Charlene McKenna), a mother of three married to a Garda detective (Barry Ward). On the surface, all seems normal until her dark past comes back to haunt her.

Shelly makes the fatal decision to kill her former partner in crime when he resurfaces and threatens to expose her. Shelly’s detective husband is assigned the job to find the killer. The pressures mount as the noose tightens, all while Shelly is also trying to deal with her unfaithful husband and an ailing son.

Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, says: “Clean Sweep is a gripping psychological thriller – BBC viewers will be hooked by Shelly, and how she copes with all of the repercussions of her secret life.”

Clean Sweep was acquired for the BBC from ZDF Studios. It was produced by ShinAwil and Incendo. It will be launching on BBC Four and BBC iPlayer later this year.
