The Mill tops upbeat facilities sector

The Mill has topped the list of the UK’s top 50 post houses in Televisual’s Facilities 50 survey of the UK post production sector for the sixth year in succession.

Now in its 27th year, Televisual’s Facilities 50 survey exclusively reveals the top 50 facilities in UK post production, based on a combination of their turnovers, kit and services they offer and what producer and peers think about them.

The Mill lands itself a place atop the pile once more through a combination of a £99m turnover and a continuing big reputation amongst producers and peers, who commented on the company’s “consistently fantastic output” and its “constant innovation”.

The Mill MD Darren O’Kelly said: “The real highlight of the year for us has to be our move to Windmill Street, W1."

"The new studio has so many groundbreaking features, including a tapeless technical workflow with the ability to route all our technology accordingly to individual project requirements and scale. It means our artists from all disciplines can easily collaborate with clients.”

The Mill has large studio spaces in London, New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago and has also expanded into production with the creation of design and animation studio Mill+.

Once again vfx dominated the top of the list, with MPC ranked second and Framestore third.

MPC posted a £67m turnover and its strong track record in commercials propelled them to the top of this year’s producer poll, with the company getting more votes from commercials producers than anyone.

Commercials producers commended the company for being “nice people” who are “always at the forefront of post production” and who can really handle big complex projects.

Framestore, ranked third overall, came top of the post industry peer poll, thanks largely to the facility’s outstanding work on Oscar-winning film Gravity.

Upbeat post sector

This year most companies have something to be cheerful about as the UK’s post production industry has well and truly shaken off the doldrums and is in a more upbeat than it has been for a long time.

Turnovers are up with 81% of the survey reporting increased revenues, and 71% of the facilities market saying profits are up too.

Although there has been the occasional casualty, most facilities are reporting business is better thanks to a healthier economy and increased spending from UK broadcasters, coupled with the huge influx of features work boosted by the UK’s tax credits.

Gramercy Park Studios, part of Hogarth Worldwide, captured the mood, reporting that its first year of business had seen rapid growth. “It’s been a rewarding roller coaster ride,” said creative director Ben Raven.

The top 10 post houses of 2014 are:

1. The Mill
2. MPC

3. Framestore
4. The Farm Group

5. Envy

6. Prime Focus

7. Smoke & Mirrors
