Commercials specialist The Mill has joined with owner Technicolor to launch Mill Film, a brand new VFX studio for the theatrical/film production market.

The initial production hub for Mill Film will be located in Adelaide, Australia with plans to expand into other film production locations to service global clients.

Despite focussing on commercials for the last several years, The Mill has a strong heritage in the features market, taking home the first vfx Oscar for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator.

The new Adelaide studio will be a massive 3000 square metres and will eventually house around 500 staff when it’s up to full strength. The South Australian government has put in A$6m into the A$26m project and The Mill hopes that generous tax breaks will pull in work to the facility.

The Mill says the focus for the studio is on Film VFX for major studios and streaming services and will also “address new opportunities in the areas of immersive media such as virtual and augmented reality.”
